There are a few places where it would NOT be advisable to use Retro Canvases. As a rule of thumb, Retro canvases look great amongst other Retro items. That doesn't mean that they will look out of place with your plasma Telly, but don't think about mixing retro if you have a brown and cream colour scheme & lots of soft furnishings and Doilies for example.
