frames - hanging a canvas
You've found the perfect piece of art from our Website & its just turned up. You want to hang it on your wall, but there are so many different options open... Will I damage the canvas? Which is the most secure method of hanging it? The bottom line is that it is really down to you how you hang the canvas, but in this article we will take a look at the different methods available to you, and really try and help you as best we can in making the choice that is right for you.
Firstly is the Wire method. Attach 2 small screws horizontally on the reverse of the canvas frame. The wire needs to be on the top half of the frame (picture 1) make sure the wire has some tension in it and that the screws can hold the weight. Then slide the canvas down on at least one screw protruding from the wall. This is a great & simple way to hang a canvas, especially if there is one screw available to you, or you only have the space for one fixing on the wall. wire hanging canvas

The next way is using Mirror Plates. these small brass plates are readily available from hardware stores and high streets chains (e.g. Wilkinson's, Wickes & B&Q in the UK) and there are 2 main ways of using them. the first (picture 3) hides the mirror plates on the inside of the frame. Then screw 2 screws into the wall the same distance apart as the mirror plates and hook the plates to the screws on the wall. The second way to use mirror plates (picture 2) is on the outside of the canvas. Fix the mirror plates to opposite sides of the canvas and screw into wall. Mirror plates are the most secure way of fixing your canvas to the wall. Hanging a canvas with the mirror plates showing is also the museums choice method of displaying art.

The final way is something were looking into providing on our website as an accessory. We've been testing (4) 3m's Command Strip system for a couple of weeks now and have to admit to being very impressed. This system is perfect for people who rent as you don't need to screw anything into the wall, and the glue strip peels off leaving no marks. They are the most expensive way of hanging a canvas, but the most practical and by far the easiest method. If boaring holes & potentially damaging a valuable wall, or drilling through a live wire puts you off hanging a canvas, we would recommend these genius strips. We have them all over our studio in fact, and would recommend the value pack (see photo, left) You will get enough to hang a couple of canvases, and even have a few left over to hang your coats!
